Cancer is a disease
that is caused by the uncontrolled growth of cells in the body. The
healthy human body is made up of a huge number of cells working in
harmony. Cancer begins when one of these cells becomes abnormal and
begins to multiply independent of the normal characteristics of cell growth, cell death and cell
replacement. This abnormal group of multiplying cells is known as cancer
growth. Cancer surgery may be used to
achieve one or more goals. Common reasons you might undergo
cancer surgery include:

|
1) Cancer prevention. If there's reason to believe that you'll develop cancer
in certain tissues or organs, your doctor may recommend removing those
tissues or organs before cancer develops. For example, if you have a genetic
condition called familial polyposis, your doctor may use cancer surgery to
remove your colon and rectum because you have a high risk of developing colon
cancer.
2) Diagnosis. Your doctor may use a form of cancer surgery to remove
all or part of a tumor - allowing the tumor to be studied under a microscope
- to determine whether the growth is cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous
(benign).
3) Staging. Cancer surgery helps your doctor define how advanced your
cancer is, called its stage. Surgery allows your doctor to evaluate the size
of your tumor and determine whether it's traveled to your lymph nodes.
Additional tests might be necessary to gauge your cancer's stage.
4) Primary treatment. For many tumors, cancer surgery is the best chance for a
cure, especially if the cancer is localized and hasn't spread. If there's
evidence that your cancer hasn't spread, your doctor may recommend surgery to
remove the cancerous tumor as your primary treatment.
5) Debulking. When it's not possible to remove all of a cancerous tumor
- for example, because doing so may severely harm an organ - your doctor may
remove as much as possible in order to make chemotherapy or radiation more
effective.
6) Relieving symptoms or side
effects. Sometimes surgery is used to
improve your quality of life rather than to treat the cancer itself - for
example, to relieve pain caused by a tumor that's pressing on a nerve or bone
or to remove a tumor that's obstructing your intestine.

At
least 10-12 children per 10,000 population will develop cancer in India
annually. Out of 60,000 children afflicted with this disease, only one out of
10 receives complete therapy. According to researchers with the new Lancet
Oncology series published on Tuesday, the burden is likely to increase if cases
are not detected early. Even as the new series has sent messages to various
governments to develop strategies for childhood cancer, for the first time the
National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research in Bangalore will come out
with a report on the incidence of different types of childhood cancers in
India. Dr A Nandakumar, director in charge of the centre, said that leukaemias,
lymphomas and retinoblastomas are very common in India. Our mission is
to advance patient care, education and research continuous to change the course
of cancer care. The close collaboration between our physician, surgeons,
Radiologists, Pathologist and other allied specialty is one of our unique
strength enabling us to provide the best care available today to the patient as
we work to discover more effective strategies to prevent and cure cancer.
