Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery in India-costs, Benefits and Risks...

What is hernia?

Sometimes the muscles of the lower abdomen weaken and they tear a bit. The inner wall of the abdomen called the peritoneum pushes out through this opening, showing up as a bulge in the groin area. Sometimes a part of the intestine can also get trapped in this bulge and the problem becomes severe. There is pain in the abdominal area. It can be a dull pain or a sharp one. The pain shoots up when the person lifts weights or has a coughing bout. It worsens at the end of the day. Hernia surgery in india, best surgeon for hernia surgery in India

What causes hernia?

Hernia cannot be put down to a single cause. People of all ages and both sexes get hernias. The walls of the abdomen have areas of weakness. Heavy strain on the abdomen, persistent cough, ageing, injury, an old incision or a congenital defect have all been observed to cause hernias.

How is a laparoscopic Hernia Surgery performed?

Laparoscopic surgery uses a thin, telescope-like instrument known as an endoscope that is inserted through a small incision at the umbilicus (belly button). Usually, this procedure is performed under general anesthesia. This requires an evaluation of a patient's general state of health, including a history and physical exam, possibly including lab work and EKG. Laparoscopic Hernia surgery in India

Patient will not feel pain during this surgery. The endoscope is connected to a tiny video camera, smaller than a dime, which projects an "inside view" of the patient's body onto television screens in the operating room. The abdomen is inflated with a harmless gas (carbon dioxide) to allow doctor to view patient's internal structures. The peritoneum (the inner lining of your abdomen) is cut to expose the weakness in the abdominal wall. A mesh patch is attached to secure the weak area under the peritoneum. The peritoneum is then stapled or sutured closed. Following the procedure, the small abdominal incisions are closed with a stitch or two, or with surgical tape. Within a few months, the incisions are barely visible

Benefits of Laparoscopic Hernia surgery:

•Tension-free, with mesh placed on inside of abdominal wall. Similar to patching up a tire.

•Radical cure for inguinal hernia treats at the source of origin, not at site of presentation.

•Minimally invasive, with 3 tiny incisions.

•Faster recovery, quicker return to normal activities and to work.

•Less pain.

•Less complications related to the wound, cord or scrotum, e.g. infection, hematoma, neuralgia.

•Uncovers and treats other unsuspected hernias.

•Best for patients with:

oPoor tissues, poor healing, or obesity.

olarge hernias or large defects

oNeed to return to heavy work, exercise, or activity quickly.

oBilateral hernias (both sides repaired thru the same 3 tiny incisions at the same time. Saves pain, time, money, 2nd incision, or operation or hospitalization.)

oRecurrent hernias (repair in virgin territory.)

oMajority of primary and / or unilateral hernias.

•Wounds are in lower midline, less sensitive areas, no injury to muscles or nerves.

•No disturbance of normal structures in the groin.

•No postoperative muscle spasm.

•No port site hernias.

•Allows the necessary extra high and wide dissection.

•Allows the use of very large mesh, 15 cm x 15 cm, if necessary.

•Avoids entering peritoneal cavity, and getting out again to do the repair.

•Avoids need to close peritoneum over the mesh.

•Avoids use of too many staples, which may trap nerves, or hinder the muscles freedom to slide.

•Recurrence rate is as good as or better than the best Open method.

What are the Risks of Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery?

•The recurrence rates are high.

•Postoperative pain can be present due to a nerve being clipped.

•Large and complicated hernias cannot be repaired successfully.

•It is much more expensive than the traditional type of surgery.
